HV, HR and SB bolts

HV/HR

The designations HV and HR apply to prestressed bolt assemblies (class 10.9). The abbreviation HV comes from the German term Hochfest Vorgespannt. HR stands for High Resistance. Both types of bolt are used in static and, above all, dynamic steel structures.

Pre-tensioning the bolts at the right moment creates a strong connection. HV and HR hexagonal bolts have a larger key size than standard bolts and therefore have a larger bearing surface under the head to better distribute the tension on the bolts.

Their defined coefficient of friction allows them to be pretensioned. When the joints are not calculated with the slip factor, prestressing is not necessary. However, it is common practice to prestress joints in order to reduce play, increase resistance to dynamic loads and reduce deformation of the structure as a whole.

SB

The Special Bolts - or SB - often have a specific size, application or treatment. They are used for specific purposes when the standard bolt is not sufficient.

SB bolt combinations are used with non-preloaded fastener assemblies. Non-preloaded connections can also be made with HR or HV bolts in accordance with EN 14399, if required.

Standards

Standard EN 14399 was developed for high-strength prestressed fasteners. Parts 1 and 2 of this standard describe the requirements and process for obtaining CE marking. The bolts, nuts and washers that make up the HV sets can be found in parts 4 and 6 of this standard. In parts 3 and 6, we find the bolts, nuts and washers that comprise HR sets. In accordance with European standard EN 14399, hot-dip galvanised HV and HR nuts are always treated with a special molybdenum disulphide lubricant that gives a dark grey or black colour. EN 15048 for SB bolts specifies that all bolted connections must meet European standards. However, the standard does not indicate which specific standards apply to the components and only specifies general technical requirements. SB bolt sets from pgb contain hex nuts ISO 4032. The strength class of the components of pgb SB bolt sets is 8.8 and they are galvanised or ISO suitable hot-dip galvanised. The EN 15048 standard was developed for non-preloaded bolted connections. Parts 1 and 2 of this standard define the requirements that must be met to obtain CE marking. The bolts and nuts that are part of SB sets are described in this standard.

Application 

HV and HR bolted connections can be used in both predominantly static structures and predominantly dynamic structures.
Examples of predominantly static constructions are hall construction, steel framing and scaffolding where no large loads are required. These connections are therefore mainly shear loaded.
For predominantly dynamic structures, we think of cranes, rails, bridges, pylons or wind turbines. These structures are subjected to greater forces and therefore the bolted connection should be fully prestressed. The connection is then not loaded on shearing, but on tensile force in the bolted connection.
